Innerspring technology was first commercialised in the late nineteenth century, but it wasn't until the post-WWII era that chemical components were introduced into the mattress manufacturing process. Their introduction was the result of new wartime chemical discoveries, along with the need of chemical companies to find new consumer products that could utilise military technology and expanded production facilities that had been created for the war effort. The late twentieth century brought 100% foam-rubber mattresses, pillow-top mattresses, pocket-spring mattresses, adjustable beds and even airbeds. The modern mattress has now become a collection of chemicals and synthetic fibres - constructed of polyurethane foam, which is made from a petrochemical base combined with a scary cocktail of stabilisers, catalysts, surfactants, fire retardants, antimicrobial additives and colourants. Unfortunately, the safety of these components, both on their own and in combination with each other, may be causing significant damage to our health. These chemicals are associated with environmental problems as well as human health hazards such as chronic bronchitis, impaired lung function, breathlessness, nausea, vomiting and allergic reactions. Some are potential carcinogens and reproductive toxins.More and more research is being done to show how harmful some chemicals are to us. It is quite scary when we look around and see how many products in our day to day life might use some or many chemicals in their manufacture - anything from our clothing to baby products. Many people are taking matters into their own hands by doing their own research into products they are purchasing. At INNATURE, we encourage you to research your bed purchase before making a purchase, this is why we put information on our website and have other references listed.
